I just thought I would write a little about this as our appointment with the pediatric urologist is coming up in the next couple of weeks.
Hypospadias is a congenital abnormality that affects a pretty significant number of baby boy's. Boy's with hypospadias will have abnormalities of the penis. So in Brennan's case his urethra is not at the tip but on the underside, his foreskin is incomplete and appears "Hooded." Apparently quite early in pregnancy around 8-9 weeks is when (if baby is a boy) that the testosterone kicks in and the genitals are formed. There are a number of things which can cause the genitals to not form correctly. In some cases it is hereditary, or it can be from using certain meds i.e. progesterone therapy, and an imbalance of hormones....(in the mom) So I blame this on my PCOS.
Brennan will likely require a surgery to repair this. I am a little scared about this but I wan't to do what is best for him. I try to think ahead to when he is a teen and adult. I am sure he wouldn't want his genitals to be different or abnormal.
He will be seeing DR K one of 2 pediatric Urologists in Edmonton. I am looking forward to meeting her. She is actually the wife of DR M my RE and they had a baby about about 2 weeks before Brennan was born. If DR K is anything like DR M then I know I will like her and be able to trust her with such a delicate situation.

Wow. I'm sorry, that's a bit scary. It sure sounds like you have really thought this through.
I think it's a good choice. It's so hard for kids to be different.
Oh, and welcome to the edmonton blogosphere.
